From 2014 to 2020 the Earth Observation Program of the European Union “Copernicus”, coordinated and managed by the European Commission and implemented in collaboration with the Member States, was the recipient of over five billion euros by EU public finance. The new Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing the Union Space Programme has established a investment of equal importance for Copernicus in the period 2021-2027.

This important financial commitment dedicated to monitoring our planet and its environment and aimed at improving the quality of life of all European citizens, commits the Commission and all EU stakeholders to play an active role in exploiting the results of Copernicus, creating a market of digital products and services that make these investments pay off.

States General of Innovation And since 2017 member of the National Forum of Copernicus Users. He collaborated with the national coordination of the Copernicus Academy in the organization and implementation of Copernicus Geodata & Satellite Facilites Open School. This training formula, innovative in the Copernicus world, has three successful editions dedicated to Agriculture 4.0 to its credit (Puglia 2018, Piedmont 2019, Umbria 2021) and has been adopted by the Copernicus Academy ISMEA which is curating editions aimed at network consultants National Rural. It was also proposed as part of the European Call 2020 of Framework Partnership Agreement on Copernicus User Uptake (FPCUP), obtaining its inclusion among the actions approved for the next work programme.

In anticipation of this new imminent commitment, which involves the creation of six new editions of the Copernicus Open School over the course of three years, we asked the Professor Bernardo De Bernardinis, former National Delegate al committee And User Forums of Copernicus and current national coordinator of the Copernicus Academy, to illustrate to the States General of Innovation the strategic importance of this European Program and its contribution to the ecological and digital transition of our continent. The exhibition will allow us to get to know the structure, role and tasks of the National Forum of Copernicus Users, the original solution established at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers for governance participatory and inclusive of all parties – public, private and civil society – interested in the development and valorisation of Copernicus products and services.

Within this frame, the Dr. Maria Vittoria Castellani, of the National Coordination of the Copernicus Academy, will present the actions implemented by the Commission and the Member States to make end users aware of the existence, usefulness and use of Copernicus data, information and services, including priority of User Uptake and - as an example - the experience of the training initiatives put in place with the Open school.

Given this framework of arguments the webinars, moderated by Sergio Farruggia, Vice President of the States General of Innovation, will allow participants to enrich the knowledge on the potential of Earth Observation And to investigate what the actions that Stati Generali dell'Innovazione - as an association and individual members - can be to implement for contribute to the market growth of the products and services made available by Copernicus.
