A simple statement connecting research<\/i> and innovation<\/i> might be:<\/span><\/p>\n

research<\/i>\u00a0produces knowledge, innovation<\/i> uses the knowledge to improve and generate products and services which are recognized as a value and paid by the market. No adoption by the market, would mean no innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The term "value" has assumed recently (substantially since the 3-14 June 1992 Earth Summit<\/span><\/a> in Rio De Janeiro, focused on climatic changes) a new semantic meaning, because it has included the paradigm of sustainability<\/i>; in turn, sustainability has been recognized as environmental, social <\/i>and economical<\/i> \u2014 the \u201ctriple issue\u201d. We could conclude, in line with the scope of this conference, that innovation has to be verified and accepted should it pass a \u201csustainability test\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Innovation is about not only products\/services<\/i>\u00a0but also processes<\/i>. the awareness of the process<\/i> is the key, once the \u201cpeople factor\u201d is taken into account. Besides R&D people, new communities of contributors are increasingly involved in the business operation of enterprises side by side with employees \u2014 partners, startups, SMEs,\u00a0 <\/span>solution providers (mostly unknown, eg utilized through crowdsourcing platforms), etc. These players in the \u201cinnovation framework\u201d are called to participate to the innovation process thanks to the Open Innovation<\/i><\/span><\/a> paradigm, rather than policy maker decisions, in house R&D, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

Open Innovation<\/a> <\/span>is recognized as a valuable and new paradigm since early 2000's. Open Innovation is a step ahead \u201cinnovation\u201d because it means that \u201copen and courageous minds receive solutions even un-expected and un-obvious by a global eco-system\u201d (of solvers worldwide). Open Innovation helps tackling four crucial (\u201chuman driven\u201d rather than \u201ctechnology driven\u201d) challenges:<\/span><\/p>\n
